DIY Dip Dye

We've all been there, our standby collared shirts are starting to look a little less than fresh. I've come up with a cheap DIY that'll breathe new life into those old button ups.

The ombre craze has hit me, people are experimenting more with colour and hair lately and I thought of a way how we can incorporate that into fashion, offcourse being the fashionista that I am!
Next week I'm going for the ombre hair and I cannot wait..but enough about me :)

I have seen this amazing ombre shirt at 3.1 Phillip Lim and I fell in love!

With these simple steps you'll be whipping up your ombre shirt in no time.

You will need:-

Bucket or a glass bowl that holds at lease 2 quarts of water
Measuring Cup
Salt
Navy blue dye or any other colour of your choice (powdered not liquid dye)
Small amount of liquid detergent
Spoon
Clip hanger
White cotton shirt with collar
Rubber gloves
Mat or an old towel and newspapers

Wash and dry your shirt even if it is still brand new, the dye will adhere when the shirt is freshly laundered. Unbutton the shirt and flip the collar up, so that the entire collar can be dyed evenly.
Begin to roll up the bottom of the shirt. Its very important that you roll up the shirt evenly, because it will ultimately effect the evenness of the dye. Secure the roll with the clip hanger, again making sure that it hangs straight and evenly. At this point make sure that you have a spot on the wall or somewhere else where you can hang up your shirt when it sits in the dye bath for several hours. Wet your shirt in water up to about 6" past where you want the dye to go. Wring out the shirt, you want it to be wet not soaking. Pour the contents of one whole packet of dye into a bowl or bucket that will hold at least 2 quarter of water. Measure 1cup of salt and pour it into the bowl with dye. Pour about 2 quarts of very hot tap water into the bowl. Do not use more than 2 quarters of water, dye will be more concentrated therefore  the result will be more intense and thats what you want to achieve. Stir the dye for several minutes until you're sure the powder has completely dissolved, pour in a tablespoon or 2 of laundry detergent and stir into the dye mixture. When everything is mixed take a paper towel and wipe off any splashes around the bowl or bucket, this step is very important as any stray dots of dye can ruin the look you are achieving. Hold the shirt by the hanger and slowly lower the collar into the dye, make sure it is being sumberged evenly, continue doing this for another 3-4" or however high or low you want the dye to go. Once the shirt is as far into the dye as you desire, hang up the shirt (while the collar is being submerged) as it will need to sit in the dye for 2-3 hrs.
After about 30mins take a cup of clean water and begin to pour small amounts down the shirt onto the dyed portion to make it look like a drip effect. After the 2-3hrs are over remove the shirt by using rubber gloves or else you will end up with matching nails and wring out any excess dye from the shirt. It is very important that your gloves do not go above the dye as you will end up with fingerprints on the shirt, keep your fingers on the dye. Wring out the shirt again, remember do not touch the white area as this will ruin the shirt. Once this is all done, rinse off your rubber gloves until they are completely free of dye and start rinsing out your shirt to remove excess dye.

You are almost done...

Again wring out the shirt, always be careful that the gloves are free from any dye residue, rinse and wring the shirt until the water is clean from any dye residue. Hang your shirt upside down to dry overnight, once it is dry iron it or leave it wrinkled and Voila you have a 3.1 Phillip Lim shirt.

Enjoy!
